Question How long have these parts been around?
Answer: Our first stud kit was installed and tested in 2008. We did not release to the public at first how we fixed these engines.
Question How many kits have you sold since then?
Answer: With both sales of kits and in-house installations; well over 3,000 Northstar sets have been sold.
Question Can you install them with the engine in the car?
Answer: We recommend engine removal, but yes- you can install the stud kit with the engine in the car. It's best to have two people to help set the heads back in place afterward.
Question Do you sell just the studs?
Answer: Yes! We certainly do. If you have your own tooling to accurately drill and tap the engine block, by all means do so.
Question Can I just drill and tap the engine freehand?
Answer: Well I suppose; but you will be sorry when it comes to putting the heads on. You need those holes very straight and it's not easy without a jig. We sell the "X-Plate" for this reason (included with full kits).
Question My engine block has been fixed before with inserts. And it failed. Can I still use your kit?
Answer: Absolutely!!! We have a lot of customers coming to us saying that the GM approved fix had failed and asking this same question. Your engine block can still be saved with our kit!
Question Is your kit GM approved?
Answer: Sadly; no. You would think that a company would look out for its customers' best interest and offer the best repair through its dealer network. But the good news is; MANY GM dealers have already switched to our kit and have never looked back. We supply a LOT of dealerships on a regular basis and they're very thankful that a working solution is finally available.
Question I've seen a video of some guy free-hand drilling and tapping. What's with that?
Answer: Just another redneck thinking that accuracy doesn't matter with engine blocks. We're not building a deck; we're fixing a Northstar Engine Block. Use a proper jig.
Question Does your installation kit work for all years?
Answer: The X-Plate will fit all Northstar years. But the X-Plate retaining bolts will only fit a particular year range. You can purchase more retaining bolts later if you fix another Northstar later on.
