TCC Solenoid Failure:
TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) Solenoid Failure is a relatively common occurrence in the Northstar Transmission (GM 4T80-E). It is a small solenoid located on the side of the transmission (driver's side) underneath the cover. It is
rather difficult to get to and replace. How do you know if you have this failure?
Here are some symptoms:
- Your RPM's are higher at cruising speed than they should be / used to be
- Your fuel economy has decreased
- Your check engine light/service engine soon light is on
- Troubles codes P1860 and P0741 are stored in in the PCM (engine computer)
The good news is, if you have both trouble codes (see our tips on retreiving trouble codes) P1860 and P0741, the cost to fix is far less than if it were simply just a P0741 code. Also, if you are
in the process of having a head gasket job done on your car, it will be cheaper to fix this now than later because once the vehicle is all back together, it is more difficult to access.
Typical cost of the solenoid itself ranges from $40-$70 depending on where you get it. We suggest using only Genuine AC-Delco solenoids here. Hey, if they last 10 years, a new one will likely give you another 10 years of trouble
free service.
What We Charge To Fix
Generally you're looking at $200 additional above the cost of a head gasket repair job, to change this solenoid at the same time. This is parts, labor, and taxes. With changing all three transmission filters and both side cover and pan gaskets,
and draining/installing new transmission fluid, you're looking at $400 in addition to a head gasket job. Now is the time to do it, you will save this back in fuel costs and drivetrain wear (due to increased RPM's) and depending on
where you live, this may be a requirement to pass the state/provincial mandated emmissions test.
The first customer we had performed this repair for, came from Canton Ohio back in 2009. It was a 2000 Cadillac STS, which was on it's second set of threaded inserts, it came to us for a Sure-Grip stud repair. The dealer had quoted $2400 to replace this solenoid alone, without
even touching the head gaskets again. When the vehicle left the transmission worked perfect again and the head gaskets were fixed (after two sets of factory inserts failed) with a 5 year warranty, and oil pan/bottom end gaskets replaced for a total bill under $3,000.
